| When
James II had a son the English feared a succession of catholic kings so
they gave the throne to his protestant daughter Ann who was married to
William of Orange King of Holland. James
went to Ireland and with the help of Sarsfield and a French army hoped to
defeat William of Orange on Irish soil. |

James
II was defeated at the Battle of the Boyne. William then tried
unsuccessfully to capture Limerick.
Departing Ireland he left the final battle to his very able, General
Ginkel.
Ginkel
was unable to capture the city that winter. The third siege began in July
1691.
